i love grace slick but i never liked the jeffersons. i love siouxsie sioux but i never liked the banshees. sometimes superstar singers pair up with inferior talent. kristina esfandiari is, for me, one such singer. she caught my attention with her work fronting a californian shoegaze band called whirr. their ep called 'around' is one of my favorite examples of modern day shoegaze done right. after that, she left the group. she then formed this cheesy metal band called king woman, who, recently produced one of the most cringe inducing music videos you're likely to see in 2017. the video is so bad it's almost good for a laugh. almost, but, it's just sad that this woman's great voice is wasted in this terrible band. miserable is her solo project. it's decent. it sounds almost like rock n' roll's answer to southern rappers who guzzle cough syrup mixed with booze. she really sounds like she is on heavy drugs when she sings. in king woman it sounds like a bad affectation, like an american punk singer trying to sound british or a british rock singer trying to sound american. in miserable it sounds more honest. given that this project is called miserable, you can count on this delivering some really uplifting tunes.
