If you dig Time for Tyner, the B side of this is the same quartet except with a different drummer. The A side is some one man gamelan orchestra type sh*t, starring Mr. Hutcherson. Anything with a bass marimba is at least worth checking out, I say. Also, there's that album cover. Are those giant venetian blinds in the background? Where are we and what's with all these handbaskets? I bet you never saw a hellscape with venetian blinds before, like some sort of private eye's office of the damned.

You might see a title like 'Destination... Out!' on a jazz record from the 1960s and think that when the needle drops you're gonna hear the sound of a fleet of ambulances racing through a hurricane in an emergency situation. (I have been a bit obsessed with that image ever since it popped into my head when I heard this audio clip of Albert Ayler wailing away at the funeral of John Coltrane) This record's destination is not quite as far out as Ayler got in his career. This music here skirts the line between in and out, and that's why I love it so much. Moncur's compositions are breathtaking. Here, three of the four tunes are composed by him. Here is an audio interview with him by Hank Shteamer, if you're interested. This group and this set of music exemplifies the best of 1960s jazz, from what I have heard. Dig it.

Jackie McLean was a very interesting intellectual who, as his album titles suggest, was very interested in innovation. This group he assembled is pure fire. This is a great documentary on him that turned me onto his music. Grachan Moncur III is someone I venerate almost as a kind of Robbie Basho of jazz music, insofar as he is a genius who is largely unknown and underappreciated. He was partially recognized during his hey day, much as Basho released several records on Fahey's Takoma label, Moncur released a couple records on the much vaunted Blue Note. This record contains two scorching tunes by Moncur, called Frankenstein and Ghost Town. You can tell by the song titles that these are darker affairs. This record sizzles and you should own it.

Recorded in 67, shortly after 'Happenings', but for some reason not released until '79. This is almost the same band as on 'Happenings', and, to me, it is always interesting to hear how much great bands can progress within the course of just a couple of sessions in their hey day. These are some burning jams.

I first got this to hear some early era Andrew Hill, and holy heck is this a great lp. There is presently a copy of this for sale on wax at my local record store, called dusty groove. I really want to buy it. But I don't really have $45 to drop on a record. Still, it is an original pressing from the year my parents got married, 55 years ago at this point. So, it's well worth $45, I bet. Sigh. A guy can dream. (What you gonna buy me for my birthday???)
