Celebrate Kris Davis Week Part 5

this record is a lot of fun for me to listen to because you can compare two different drummers playing with the same trio. cyrille is an older statesman of the avant-guard who has played in the bands of walt dickerson and cecil taylor. on first listens, i might like the approach of geral cleaver on this trio's more recent record, crowded solitudes, a little better just because it's more beat centric than what you hear cyrille play here. still, there's no shortage of style on display here. both this and the more recent trio record are absolutely phenomenal.

yea this record helped really suck me into jazz on this particular jazz jag i'm on. standards done inside out but not off the deep end. really scorching playing. the first track alone is enough to pull your wig back. the fact that these wild players are playing all wild trying to say something new trying to say something true, but are still tethered to the polestar of these standards, that's what's so gripping to me here.

Celebrate Kris Davis Week Part 2

i bought this on bandcamp a few days after it came out on the strength of this group's previous record, and it does not disappoint. every player on here slays both as a composer and as a musician. it's a long standing tradition for jazz "cats" to make albums full of standards, turning the tried and trie inside out and so on and so forth. this group really does it well. i really like hearing what laubrock has to say on the sax. on her records as a leader, the tunes are too far out for me. she plays with some of my favorite players all the tim, though, so i always want to try to understand what she's got to say. this group's records have been a great gateway for me into how burning her style can be. and also, of course, kris davis slays all day every day. favorite tune on this has got to be 'what's new' reminds me of the linda ronstadt version my mom had on cd when we got our first cd player. youtube it.

This quartet kicks out some bangers. Drums are real loud and bumpin' on this. Vandermark is not my favorite horn blower, truth be told. Revis' compositions are mighty nice. As usual, Kris Davis makes it all more than worth your while.

someone i know passed away this week and i felt sad. definitely felt mad as well. mad at a lot of things. as these feelings ran their course, i needed music. should i listen to my late friend's music? that felt too raw. angry music didn't help. chilled out music felt like i was patronizing myself, the inner debate going, i am calm, you're the one who's not calm, no, you calm down. that of course didn't help. so then i stumbled on this elegiac record. it was written in rememberance's of the composer's late father. here, the band plays as one, emphasizing the beauty of the tunes (game) not the solos (playaz). i found this style of jazz to be really effective calm down music. it's like a soft caress.
