a lot of techno music producers also work as professional djs.  i like to get aquainted with electronic music on full length albums when possible.  i also love various artist compilations from respected record labels.  yet another tremendous way to consume music is via dj mixes like this one.  this is a mix paula temple did for french magazine tsugi.  it's an upbeat and very intelligent set aimed to make you sweat.  all the bpm of the tracks flow into each other seamlessly.  so it has the feel of a really memorable set you might hear in a club.  often dj mixes like this one are only available as a single hour + long mp3.  what i love about this is that the track divisions are there and you can follow along and see which cut is by which artist.  paula temple is a label boss who's work caught my attention after i noticed that she'd done collaborative work with artists i respect such as the two cuts included here that she did with sos gunver ryberg, aisha devi and rrose.  her bio from discogs: "Paula Temple is a DJ, producer and music technology pioneer. Her tracks have appeared on R&S Records, Noise Manifesto, 50 Weapons and Jeff Mill’s Exhibitionist DVD. Chris McCormack released her first EP "The Speck of the Future" in 2002 on his label Materials. Paula Temple is the co-developer of one of the first live performance midi controllers called the MXF8, which she took on tour from 2003 to 2005. After taking a long break, Paula Temple returned in 2013 with "Colonized" EP on R&S Records, followed by a second EP "Deathvox" in 2014 on the legendary label. "Gegen" came out at the end of 2014 on Noise Manifesto, becoming a favourite in techno clubs and festivals worldwide. In 2015 she launched Decon/Recon on Noise Manifesto, a collaborative record release, producing under the name Jaguar Woman alongside artists rRoxymore, Oni Ayhun and Planningtorock under the name Aquarian Jugs. Her track "Oscillate" was released on the final split series of Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label in October 2015. Much in demand for her remix work as well as her hybrid DJ/live performances, her most notable remixes include Perera Elsewhere, The Knife, Peaches, Planningtorock and in 2016 R&S Records made a special release of her remixes for The Prodigy."

i heard this compilation when it came out in january and thought, meh.  it didn't grab me.  in the four months since, i feel like i've been doing a lot of gateway drugs, musically speaking.  i revisited this and suddenly it clicked.  12 tracks clocking in at one hour and thirty-eight minutes.  it's amazing that the vibe feels consistent throughout.  dreamy harbor is indeed a perfect name for this collection of tunes by various artists.  it stays nice and gentle.  it rewards close attention but doesn't demand it.  i really appreciate that.  it feels like your brain is getting a massage all throughout.  what time of day suits this music best?  hard to say, and i like that mystery.  i like to imagine this music playing in some futuristic massage parlor or day spa, and that thought gives me a happy ending.

found out about this record via discogs.  there was a remix record of this record that included reworks of this material by dasha rush and kangding ray.  that was enough for me to check out the source material, this.  i think this one is a banger.  fully rideable, front to back.  resident advisor gave it a 4/5, which is quite high for them.  see if you dig.

Tresor is "Berlin based techno label started in July 1991 by Dimitri Hegemann, taking its name from the techno club set up in an underground vault following the fall of the Berlin Wall." according to Discogs.  In other words, this is OG fare.  If you were to take my word for it, I'd tell you these are some pretty fresh beats.  Here's what Boomkat tells us: "Jonas Kopp pulls back to the gravity of Berlin’s Tresor for his 2nd album of astrally inclined techno purism. The Argentine producer’s sound is shaped into a rolling narrative, navigating between SITS-style 909 and synth pressure in Projections From Alcyone thru the turbulent electro zones of Tuning Frequency to discover intricate treasure at Galactic Core and the slippery refinement of Aile.  he gets lost in deep space with Photon Belt’s frantic bleeps and overstepping pulses, before steering back on course with the steady charge of Bridge To The Stars and  locates his Millsian muse in the deep star fields of Taygeta and the optimistic finale, 5D World." Ya heard?

if i handed you a clear unmarked plastic bag tied with a ribbon and in it contained many colored gum drops, you might say, 'thanks, jack! i like gum drops.' to which i'd be compelled to say, 'my name's not jack, and those ain't gumdrops.  they're drugs.  all designer.  the newest thing, kid.  each one will have you flying high as a kite.  each trip is a different flavor.  here's the thing, no ill side effects whatsoever.  nothing.  you will feel perfectly fine in the morning.  just let yourself go, mango.'  in your head, you might be wondering why i called you mango just then.  you might not believe anything i've just said.  the good news is, i'm not talking about mystery bag of candy, i'm talking about this compilation of music, featuring exclusive tracks from kangding ray, eomac, and a bunch of other sick producers i hadn't heard of previosly, but to whom i will now be paying close attention.  favorite head trip off this at present is the ninth cut by sos gunver ryberg.  bananas.  and hey, if you like this, proceeds from their bandcamp go towards fighting ovarian cancer.

on social media, i decided to stop following most people i know.  instead, i just like artists record labels magazines restaurants authors djs etc.  this dj posted a track that showed up in my news feed last week.  i had no recollection of who this eomac person was.  i didn't have any music in my library from eomac.  the track he posted was one that he did for a recent comp that also new unreleased music by kangding ray, who's one of my favorites.  my interest was piqued.  i began to dig.  the track was great.  the comp was great.  i grabbed it.  i hit eomac's discog page.  i am really into full length records by electronic artists.  a full length takes a lot of work, especially to make one that's really good, one that's fully rideable front to back.  most are happy just producing singles.  and that's fine, if you're a dj or a club goer.  but if you listen to most of your music all day at home and at work non-stop, singles become too much work.  i am presently trying to educate myself in reverse chronological order.  by that i mean, i like to see what appeals to me among that which is current first.  i can't really tell if stuff sounds dated if i don't know what's going on now, goes my thinking.  i can't really feel like i can get a gague on what stands the test of time and what doesn't if i don't know the current climate.  so, this full length right here, spectre, is from 2014.  that's like iphone 5S territory.  ancient history.  so, not expecting much, i youtubed this.  i was barely ten seconds in when bells rang inside my head.  i need this, i thought.  this has classic material written all over it.  dig it.

this group caught my attention because one of the two members is a percussionist for the group raime, who's work i find interesting.  this record is eight tracks of brooding electronic with industrial tinged beats.  makes for good background music while you work, or simply something nice to zone out to.

i am nominating this record for record of the month this month, may 2017.  it's house music.  it's beautiful.  i got this record and listened to it and nothing much else for the first 24 hours that i had it.  it's really the mood i want to be in most of the time.  lush textures.  dreamy aural vistas.  it rewards attention but doesn't demand it, is equally effective in the background or front and center turned up.  sounds great coming out of your crappy cell phone speakers while you take a shower, sounds great in shitty earbuds, sounds great on a booming system.  see if you dig it as much as i do.  i'm telling you you can not lose.

ripping techno comp from float records out of the netherlands. i love techno comps because a lot of artists don't have long players out, and that doesn't mean they're not putting out great music.  i read an interview with dan the automator of dr octagon fame recently where he said basically it is as if we are harkening back to the era of 45s.  singles often get the same amount of press as an album, so a lot of artists don't even bother to make albums.  controversial perhaps.  nonetheless, the more you go down the rabit hole of electronic music, the more you see artists who don't have full length records out.  comps tend to be well curated and have a nice overall feel, as well as bring some degree of diversity too.  this one is no exception.
