Tortoise - 'TNT' (1998)
LARRY YOUNG - MOTHER SHIP (1969)
LEE MORGAN - THE LAST SESSION (1971)
so the story goes that lee morgan was pulled up out of the depths of heroin addiction by helen, an over-the-hill ex-prostitute who helped him get his career back on track and put together his best working band, the one heard on "the last session." but rascally ol' lee was seeing a hot little younger honeydip on the side, and when helen showed up for lee's set at slug's club in the east village and saw him with his #2 hoochee mama, they had some words. helen split, then came back with lee's pistol and shot him in the chest, boom, dead at 33.
at least we got this killer last jam on record. give it up for lee, with billy harper on tenor sax, grachan moncur III on trombone, bobbi humphrey on flute, harold mabern on piano/fender rhodes, reggie workman on acoustic bass, jymie merritt on electric bass, freddie waits on drums & recorder.
