recommendation for yr weekend listening: justin brown nyeusi. i've been checking the full album on spotify. didn't like it at first at all, sounded too fusion-y, and i wanted to hear more of the j. brown flavor i expected from the ambrose akinmusire quartet. but this is a whole other animal that deserves its own pair of fresh ears. so i checked the nice NYT write-upfor context. all the electronics (multiple keys/synths + some kinda MIDI sax played by the mighty mark shim from vijay's sextet) create a heady swirling mass of sound that kept me coming back for more. after the 3rd or 4th full listen, i am diggin this album HARD. maybe it's some kinda summer-y vibe. maybe it's my personal taste in beats-meets-electronics. maybe it's the hypnotic little R&B-on-acid mini-melodies that lurk beneath the noise. maybe it's a connection to that rare 70s fusion that i actually like. see what yinz think.
