r.a.i.l. b.a.n.d. - 'b.u.f.f.e.t. h.o.t.e.l. d.e. l.a. g.a.r.e.' (1973)

Amadou walked silently across the lot in the freshly fallen snow. People had said a lot of things about America, a fair bit of it shit. No one mentioned the cold. The novelty of fallen snow took a bit to wear off, but the cold cut him to the bone. He brushed the snow of the aged Ford. He thought for a moment. Turn the key, let it run and then defrost. Carl the Super said this was how to start a car in the cold months. Amadou began to enjoy the ritual of it and the fact it bought him 10 solid minutes of time to think during the day. No excuses. He had to warm up as much as the Ford did. Part of the reason he bought the car was the cassette deck. He slid the tape into the deck and leaned back and closed his eyes. Home came back to him 6 days a week at 4am.

$38k is the average U.S. Student loan debt. $38k buys a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT V8 crew cab. $38k also will buy you a 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner V8. Rally Red with bucket seats. You can listen to Grimes and consider yourself cool and that's okay. You can also look around a little bit more and see what $38k will get ya. Then you can listen to Virginia Wing and that will be cool too.

S.t.u.d.i.o. O.S.T. - 'S.c.e.n.e.s. (2012-2015)' (2016)

i consider s.t.u.d.i.o. o.s.t.'s excellent album, s.c.e.n.e.s. 2012-2015, as something of a minimal techno starter kit.  it's elegant, it's breezy, and it makes you want to move it move it.  i listen to this coming out of my monophonic cell phone speaker quite often when i take a shower.  it gets me going.  i like to move it move it.

context can be of utmost importance with regard to how music strikes a listener.  once upon a time a friendly local record store clerk might recommend you a cd, you might spend fifteen bucks on it, you'd take it home, and you'd listen to it again and again, wrapping your head around it along the way, working out whether you connected with this piece of art you held in your hands.  far be it from me to bemoan the passing of a bygone era.  the pros of the way things are now may in fact outweigh the cons.  still, at present, it seems that a little extra effort might be due to certain musicss beyond the casual couple of clicks.  virginia wing is just such a band.  what do they have to recommend them?  well, they make pop music in this day and age and their music conveys a certain intelligence, and that in and of itself is something of an accomplishment.  the tunes on this record may not be immediately catchy.  still, repeated listens promise to draw the listener in.  that is to say that their music contains more than what meets the ear at first listen.  if you saw this group performing on the street near a bus stop busking for spare change, you might buy their music, and they might just change your world.

driving in my car with an old bandmate and lifelong chum last weekend i put on jim black's recent trio record, with which i am obsessed, because i wanted this man, who's musical opinion i respect very highly, to dig these sounds i'd been into recently. 'whoever thought you'd get into jazz...' he mused. it's true, i did used to view jazz as music that primarily belonged in elevators and cruise ships.  and in the last decade or so my opinion reversed completely.  'i like complex music.' i told him. this was anything but a confession. this was more like an entreaty. tell me what music made with acoustic instruments has complexity, sophistication, and emotional depth lately.  if i continue on this rant, i expose the fact that i am an old curmudgeon.  i digress.  we listened to the jim black record together, and at one point, in response to me saying, 'dude, check out this sick riff on track eight,' he said to me, 'this sounds like something thrill jockey could have put out back in their hay day.' this was high praise. thrill jockey is a chicago based record label that we two friends grew up following as a lighthouse that ushered in innovative instrumental music.  rock groups who pushed the envelope like tortoise trans am and the sea and cake along with innovative electronic pop acts like oval and mouse on mars really expanded horizons for young minds like ours in the 90s.  is innovative music made much with guitars these days? certainly. thrill jockey remains active and still deserves accolades for putting out records by artists representing a vast array of musical styles to this day.  labels are for profit, and a lot of the artists currently on that label in question come from one scene or another.  this in and of itself does not make the music bad.  nonetheless, for my money, music from farther flung scenes, or from no scenes at all, take the biscuit when it comes to making innovative music, these days more than ever, it seems.  check out these two tracks by shrine of insanibilis and tell me if you agree.

recently i revisited a record called valley of the jeep beats by the inimitable terminator x.  i wanted it to stand the test of time and sadly for me it did not.  if public enemy were making a record in 2017, i think detroit's jay daniel could offer up plenty of fresh funky beats based on the strength of this lp.

npr writes an insightful adoring review here.  check this out.  shut up and dance.

i.l.l.u.m. s.p.h.e.r.e. - 'g.l.a.s.s.' (2016)

Wed, 01/04/2017 - 17:32 -- bryan

in efforts to open my mind to types of musics outside of my wheelhouse, i try to alter what i might typically expect from a given record.  having grown up with music that is largely song oriented, my tendency is to expect some sort of direct one to one emotional engagement with a given piece of music.  that can certainly feel silly at times.  i have never wanted to be or wanted to 'rock you like a hurricane', for example.  another approach might be to take one's emotional engagement to a given place, or journey... and soundtrack it.  if i walked into a restaurant or a store or a club and this music was playing, i would think, this seems to be a cool spot on the map.

once upon a time i went to a bathhouse in japan for the first time.  it really was not what i expected, it wasn't wood, it wasn't elegant, it wasn't sexy.  i was with one friend naked in front of a bunch of tired old men.  i made the most of it, crouched onto a grimy plastic footstool washed myself and got in the big bath.  after a while, i noticed a one man sized bath off to the side.  i don't speak japanese, but my good friend does, so i asked him what was the idea with the solo tub.  he told me there was an electric current running through the bathwater inside this tub. i had to try it.  it was one of the craziest sensory experiences of my life, i shall never forget it.  for the first ninety seconds, on the inside i screamed silently to myself, "ohmygodohmygodohmygodihavegottogetoutofhere"... then something happened and my body got used to it and i was in heaven my every sense of touch hightened by electric current... then after several minutes, the preceeding feeling returned, "ohmygodohmygodohmygodihavegottogetoutofhere"... so i got out.  this record does not sound anything like that experience.  however, i was thinking, if i had to describe the sound of taking a bath by using electronic sounds instead of words, it might sound like this record.
