promise and warning post number one thousand!!!

this is a release that gives and gives with repeated listens. it did not grab me on first listen. but, once you get to track eleven, you should be sold. in fact, you might even want to skip straight to track eleven. it's called 'horse'... as far as i can tell, it's about horses. i think it's my favorite song of 2016. duck fight goose is a brilliant band. they hail from shanghai. their previous long player, 'sports', available elsewhere on this site, is a great record of kraut rock inspired tunes. this new record went into the future. in fact, the title is german - if you replace the v's for u's - for 'club future'. this definitely sounds like 2016 music.

i've been doing this blog of free musics for five years and five months. i waited a while to decide upon a record that was worthy enough to hold the one thousanth marker. this band is certainly forward thinking.

b.l.a.c.k. m.a.r.b.l.e. - 'i.t.'s. i.m.m.a.t.e.r.i.a.l.' (2016)

california's black marble, a goth pop duo of bass and synths, made the switch to the ghostly international label over from sub pop. the album cover might be my least favorite of any album i have liked thus far in 2016. seriously, that album cover is so bad i almost did not want to deface my site with its ugliness. also, my friend tells me this band sucks live. but guess what, they know how to write a nice pop song. this album is much better than their last one in every way. it has consistently good tunes and is just about fully rideable with only a few duds. nice pleasant inoffensive doing the dishes music. works fine for breastfeeding too.

k.l.a.r.a. l.e.w.i.s. - 't.o.o.' (2016)

i was reading an interview with katie gately after the recent release of her excellent album 'colors', and in it, she provided a playlist, and a track from klara lewis was on there. artists recommending artists, this can be among the best ways to discover new art. this klara lewis certainly did not disappoint. i might even like it better than the katie gately. granted, gately's record takes more chances than this one. still, this one delivers again and again on repeated listens. electronic records tend to have a short shelf life for me, just because they tend to sound dated after a year or two, often times. this record is very minimal, and quite tasteful. it has a really soothing vibe. i suspect this might be in rotation for me for some time to come.

k.u.e.d.o. - 's.l.o.w. k.n.i.f.e.' (2016)

back in 2011, i was living in indonesia studying gamelan. i'd been there for a couple years by this point and was starving for fresh western sounds to tickle my ear drums. a friend of mine brought me a year end best of 2011 december issue of wire magazine and i ate it up with a spoon. kuedo's debut record, 'severant', was among the records i learned about through that issue, and i promptly downloaded it and devoured it. five years later i'm happy to give his latest effort a spin and learn that kuedo still keeps it fresh and interesting. moody soundtracky electro sounds on this fine release.

i support this guy's work as matter of principle these days. on this outing he makes a vintage infused moody synth driven record. tasty.

o.v.a.l. - 'p.o.p.p.' (2016)

90s german glitch master markus popp continues to re-invent his oval project for the 2010s and beyond. i worshipped this guy's records when i was in high school and had several on vinyl. the cerebral sound of cds skipping, used as percussion in his deliciously complex compositions, had me hooked. on this record, popp borrows from his signature sound, updates it to modern platforms of computer music making, and takes aim at making a dance record.
