bands that can make me like a genre i didn't think i had any interest prior to hearing their spin on things... bands like this really impress me. i didn't think i liked brutal death metal until i heard guttural secrete. are you familiar with the term riff salad? i see this term used in a lot of reviews. it generally is deployed to disparage song writing abilities of bands, saying that they just kinda threw a bunch of parts into a blender and released what came out without careful consideration of what sounded good. well, brutal death metal bands turn this idea inside out. almost all of the bands i've heard who are even half way decent, their music almost entirely consists of riff salads. brutal death bands play songs with loads of parts, most of which are played at breakneck tempos. the vocals consist of belching snoring regurgitation sounds. on the surface it almost seems like the music is a joke. to an extent it's true, a lot of the bands display a sense of humor, and devourment is no exception with song titles like 'serial cocksucker', 'masturbating at the slab' or 'anal electrocution'. it almost seems like the lyrical content might have been penned by a bunch of prepubescent boys rather than by grown ass men. if you're feeling kind, you could describe this quality of brutal death metal as primal. whatever your inclinations, if you give brutal death metal anything deeper than a cursory listen, if you go just slightly further than scratching it's surface, anyone will see that it's serious business with mindblowing amounts of work that goes into its construction. this record - which i understand is somewhat legendary in some circles of fans of this music - was recorded twice, because the band really cared that much to get it just how they wanted it. one of the members was incarcerated around the time of its release. i feel like you can hear the blood sweat and tears in this lp. after discovering guttural secrete's brilliance, i spent a lot of time checking out lesser bands whose music did not measure up to that high standard of greatness that they'd set. suffice to say, if you take a look at the encyclopedia metallum entry on guttural secrete and navigate to similar bands - a category that gets ranked by fans, the first one that comes up is devourment. this record is their masterpiece. it's chock full of complexity and extremes... yet it also grooves so hard that it's a ton of fun to spin. embrace your primal instincts and surrender to devourment.
