i was reading an entry of the column dank slams and it dawned on me that i didn't own this album. i remedied that. so glad i did. you know, miles davis went electric after his landmark album nefertiti, and that turning point was very controversial for a lot of people. this, deicide's third album, is a bit of a pivot from the one that came before it, legion. a lot of people say deicide went downhill after legion. i believed the hype. then i heard this one. it's not off the rails and unhinged and berserker like their first two records. it's more taut and controlled and simpler. but damn. the songs slay. in my reading, legion is a record that inspires maniacs like the guys from portal. whereas this one is one that inspires less arty metal heads, guys who wear cargo shorts instead of cloaks, brutal death guys with snap backs and camoflage. deicide is the second best selling death metal band after cannibal corpse. it fits that different records can inspire legions of fans in vastly different directions. PS check out this dude's bass cover of one of the tracks on the B-side of this release. Siiiiiiiiick!
